Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup
Are you curious, creative, passionate or interesting? I’m sure most of you said yes. If you are one of those people you need to be at TEDxDetroit next Wednesday, September 28th.
Yes, I’m on the board and an executive producer so I’m a bit biased. But… I wrote this post before I took on those duties after attending the first TEDxDetroit in 2009. This isn’t a conference, it’s an explosion of ideas. We share positive ideas for the world from Detroit.
TEDxDetroit takes place at Orchestra Hall in the Max M. Fisher Music Center from 8am to 6pm on September 28th.
Do you want to win a pair of tickets to TEDxDetroit?
To enter just leave a comment on how you are curious, creative, passionate or interesting. They can be funny or serious, compelling or sarcastic. The contest ends at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23rd and the winner will be chosen at random (by random.org).
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
I have to warn you about this edition of the Weekend Roundup. There are so many things going on in Detroit this weekend and many of them involve beer. Rock on you crazy fall season and all your cool beer events!
Weekend Roundup
1. Oktoberfest - There are two great Oktoberfest celebrations in Detroit this weekend. Detroit Oktoberfest takes place in Chene Park on Friday, September 23rd. The Woodbridge Pub is also having a neighborhood Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 24th.
2. Tour de Troit - Bicyclists will be taking over the streets of Detroit as over 3,000 riders participate in this supported ride. See Detroit on two wheels and explore the sights and historic areas. September 24th.
3. Michigan Craft Beer Stroll - Stroll through the streets of Royal Oak and sample beer from Michigan's top craft brewers. This is a benefit for the Friends of the Royal Oak Public Library.
4. Tashmoo Biergarten - A pop-up European-style biergarten in the West Village neighborhood of Detroit? Yep! Enjoy Michigan-based craft beers and play a game of cornhole. Read all about the Tashmoo Biergarten in yesterday's post. September 25th.
5. Detroit Restaurant Week - Make your reservations and get your napkins at the ready—it's time to feast at some of Detroit's finest restaurants for a $28 prix fixe meal. September 23 through October 2nd.

I'm pumped that I finally get to meet you in person!
I want to go to TedXDetroit because I am curious and passionate. After spending ten years away from the Metro Detroit area, I've been inspired by all the ideas and actions in the city and I want to know MORE! Through networking I've learned about Motor City Connect, Operation: Kid Equip and the Imagination Station among other ideas, so what more am I missing.
I'm also passionate about support cancer patients and autism awareness. I'm touched by both in life and I am working towards helping others!
I actually am not at all curious, creative, passionate or interesting. Maybe TedXDetroit will inspire me?
I entered a few designs to the Mind the Gap Competition for the Detroit Design Festival, and 2 were chosen in the top 20!
I heard so many great things about TEDx last year but I couldn't attend because I was finishing up my degree in architecture. Now that I've finally graduated I would love to be apart of something so creative & inspiring!
Curios enough to click through via Twitter. Creative enough to come up with this (or lame, whatever). Passionate enough to watch "The Future We Will Create" and want more... MUCH more. Interesting (or cheap) enough to wear a white t-shirt and tape nickels and dimes to it for Halloween and tell people "I'm President Obama." (The year before, 2007, I put on a football jersey and dragged along a toy dog with fake blood smeared across its face to impersonate an unnamed sports figure, which wasn't too well received by the elderly women I met at a gas station.)
It seems like I’m always running. I run my own company that helps local businesses promote themselves. I run several charitable and fraternal organizations to that help research a myriad of medical conditions, and I’m running for my local school board to help save the school district I grew up in so my children can share in the great experiences I had. It seems I never stop running so I think it might be nice to slow down and see the many ways everyone else is helping Metro Detroit run, and grow.
I am very curious about the origins of all things, but specifically music. I spend a lot of my precious hours researching song meanings, so that I can better understand what the musician is feeling and conveying. For example, did you know that the smash hit "Celebrate" by Kool and the Gang was written in celebration of one of the songs on their previous album reaching number one?
Red Wings are in preseason action at the Joe Friday and Sunday. Justin Verlander takes the mound for his final regular season start on Saturday for the Tigers plus it is fan appreciation weekend for the Tigers.
How I am passionate, creative, and interesting:
Passionate (involvement in):
- Marketing Degree (University of Phoenix)
- ADvance Study Program (The Adcraft Club)
- Media Buying Academy's 4-day "Bootcamp"
- Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute (DEI)
- The Adcraft Club Membership
- The Chevy Super Bowl College Ad Challenge (Team # 440)
Creative (marketing ideas I have for):
- GM (pre-bailout, how to rebound WITHOUT loan)
- OnStar (how to double/triple revenues)
- GM Hummer (hidden treasure potential sold off)
- GM’s ‘Backyard Party’ (new way for GM to promote its car – for FREE!)
- Monster.com (enter/own two new markets)
- McDonalds (how to double annual revenues)
- Google (how to increase annual revenue to surpase Walmart’s)
- Google’s ‘Millions-Dollar Founders Award (how to get a better ROI)
- Detroit Pistons (buy the Pistons, own the NBA)
- Anomaly.com (how to become ad agency industry template)
- Facebook (how to enter/own multiple markets)
- Oprah (take her brand to next level)
- QVC (ad revenue streams)
- NIKE (how to multiply its profits ‘white collar’ style)
- And many more ideas…
Interesting:
- ALL OF THE ABOVE!
As you can see [from above] I am passionate, creative and interesting (without being immodest).
I am an ‘idea guy’, that’s is I naturally come up with big ideas (usually marketing types, but not always). I think I will be a natural fit to attend the TEDxDetroit affair next Wednesday. I believe by meeting others like myself, I can contribute a lot.
Bonus: I only need ONE ticket.
- Brian
